Sri Lanka-Thailand Visa-Free Travel Agreement Gets Cabinet Approval

COLOMBO, October 6, 2026 — The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to sign a visa exemption agreement between Sri Lanka and Thailand, allowing citizens holding ordinary passports to travel between the two countries without obtaining a visa in advance.
Under the proposed agreement, Sri Lankan and Thai nationals with valid ordinary passports will be permitted to enter, exit and transit through the respective countries without a visa for eligible travel purposes.
Travellers will be permitted to stay for a maximum of 30 days per visit, subject to an overall limit of 90 days within any 180-day period.
The visa exemption will not cover individuals travelling for employment, education, media activities or other purposes for which prior authorization is required.
The proposed agreement is intended to strengthen the longstanding friendly relations between Sri Lanka and Thailand while making travel between the two countries more convenient.
The Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs to proceed with the signing of the visa exemption agreement.
The move is expected to facilitate greater people-to-people connectivity between Sri Lanka and Thailand, particularly for eligible visitors travelling for tourism and other permitted purposes.
