Colombo Bourse Loses Rs. 324 Billion in October as ASPI Falls Below 20,000

COLOMBO, October 21, 2026 — The Colombo Stock Exchange’s total market capitalisation has fallen by nearly Rs. 324 billion since the beginning of October, with continued declines pushing the benchmark All Share Price Index (ASPI) below the 20,000-point level on October 20.

Total market capitalisation stood at Rs. 7,224.21 billion following Tuesday’s trading, compared with Rs. 7,548.18 billion at the beginning of the month. The decline represents a reduction of Rs. 323.97 billion, equivalent to approximately 4.29% of the market’s opening value for October.

The market ended lower for the second consecutive session of the week on October 20. The ASPI shed 75.64 points to close at 19,983.78, slipping below the psychologically significant 20,000-point threshold.

The S&P SL20 Index also declined, losing 19.24 points to finish at 5,681.51, reflecting further weakness among the shares represented in the index.

The latest losses have extended the erosion in the exchange’s aggregate market value during the first 20 days of October, leaving market capitalisation at approximately Rs. 7.22 trillion.

The downturn comes just over a year after the CSE reached a historic valuation milestone. On October 14, 2025, its total market capitalisation surpassed Rs. 8 trillion for the first time.

The October 20 valuation was approximately Rs. 775.79 billion below that Rs. 8 trillion threshold, underscoring the extent of the difference between the market’s latest value and the milestone reached a year earlier.
