HIPG and Al-Futtaim Logistics Explore Stronger Gulf Vehicle Links and Port Investment Opportunities

COLOMBO, November 8, 2026 — Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) and Al-Futtaim Logistics have explored expanding their business relationship, including vehicle shipping links to Gulf markets and potential investment opportunities at the port.
The discussions took place during a courtesy visit to Hambantota International Port by a delegation led by Al-Futtaim Group’s Vice Chairman. Talks focused on strengthening commercial ties and the role of the CASCADIA RoRo Feeder Service in supporting regional vehicle supply chains.
The delegation also expressed interest in investment opportunities beyond the scheduled agenda. Port officials outlined prospects across Hambantota’s operations and industrial park.
The visit followed the publication of Al-Futtaim’s white paper, “Resilience in Motion”, which identifies Hambantota as one of three alternative gateways used to maintain automotive supplies following disruption around the Strait of Hormuz in March 2026.
The other gateways were Port Sultan Qaboos in Muscat and Port Khor Fakkan in the Gulf of Oman. According to Al-Futtaim, the three routes collectively moved more than 25,000 finished vehicles into the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
That total covers all three routes. The alternative arrangements helped maintain dealer supplies and supported automotive manufacturers in returning to full production capacity.
Hambantota’s participation demonstrated how transhipment facilities outside the immediate disruption zone could support vehicle deliveries to affected regional markets.
The CASCADIA RoRo Feeder Service, launched on June 9, 2026, forms part of these connections. It is operated by CASCADIA, a Canada-headquartered maritime logistics specialist with regional operations in trade hubs including Dubai.
Al-Futtaim’s white paper highlights the importance of advance contingency planning, shipment visibility and coordination across customs and regulatory systems. It describes how alternative corridors became operational within weeks, supported by local capabilities.
The discussions come as logistics providers examine ways to strengthen supply reliability and develop alternative routes capable of responding to future shipping disruptions.
Al-Futtaim Logistics, part of the Dubai-headquartered Al-Futtaim Group, serves the finished-vehicle, aerospace, retail, and food and beverage sectors. Its network of strategic partners extends its reach to more than 150 countries.
