COLOMBO, October 4, 2026 — The Government is working to provide digital connectivity to secondary schools across Sri Lanka by the end of this year, as part of efforts to expand access to digital education while promoting the safe use of technology among children, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said.

Addressing the 2026 World Children’s Day celebration at the S. de S. Jayasinghe Stadium in Dehiwala on Friday (October 3), the Prime Minister said ensuring the well-being and development of every child remains a key priority of the Government.

She stressed that World Children’s Day should not be treated as a one-day event, but as a reminder of the continuing responsibility to create a safe, secure and supportive environment for children.

Digital Education Expansion

The Prime Minister said education remains a central priority, highlighting its role in preparing children to become responsible citizens and participate effectively in a rapidly changing society.

A new school curriculum is scheduled to be introduced for Grades 2 and 6 in 2027, she said.

Meanwhile, the Government is continuing to upgrade school infrastructure and digital facilities, with the target of providing digital connectivity to secondary schools nationwide by the end of 2026.

The initiative is expected to expand students’ access to digital learning resources and support the wider integration of technology into school education.

Amarasuriya also stressed the importance of ensuring that children are equipped to use digital technology safely and responsibly.

Focus on School Transport Safety

The Government is also working with the Ministry of Transport to strengthen the safety of school transportation services.

According to the Prime Minister, the Government plans to introduce minimum safety standards, laws, regulations and guidelines aimed at improving the safety of school transport.

She also highlighted children’s access to healthcare, nutritious food and school meals, while stressing the importance of promoting sports and physical activity within the school system.

“Children should be given the opportunity to play freely. It is our responsibility to create an environment with the necessary infrastructure and safety for them to do so,” she said.

The World Children’s Day celebration was organised jointly by the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council and the Independent Television Network (ITN) under the theme “Mahangu Sampatha – Daruwan Surakimu.”
