CSE Ends Lower as Investors Focus on Banking and Capital Goods Stocks

Sri Lanka’s stock market closed lower, with both the All Share Price Index (ASPI) and S&P SL20 ending the session in negative territory amid mixed investor interest across key counters.

The ASPI was weighed down by price declines in several major stocks, including Melstacorp, Dialog Axiata and Cargills, while market turnover exceeded Rs. 1.5 billion.

The S&P SL20 also recorded a decline as investors remained selective across blue-chip and large-cap counters. High-net-worth and institutional investor activity was particularly evident in Sampath Bank, Commercial Bank and Digital Mobility Solutions Lanka.

Meanwhile, mixed interest was recorded in John Keells Holdings, Commercial Credit & Finance and Renuka Agri Foods, while retail investors remained active in HNB Finance, ACME Printing & Packaging and Asia Siyaka Commodities.

Foreign investor participation remained subdued, although foreign investors ended the session as net buyers.

The Banking sector emerged as the biggest contributor to market turnover, led by trading activity in Sampath Bank and Commercial Bank. The sector index edged up 0.05%.

Sampath Bank gained Rs. 0.50, or 0.36%, to close at Rs. 139.50, while Commercial Bank declined Rs. 0.25, or 0.12%, to end at Rs. 205.00.

The Capital Goods sector was the second-largest contributor to turnover, driven mainly by Royal Ceramics and John Keells Holdings. The sector index declined 0.55%.
Royal Ceramics fell Rs. 0.60, or 1.22%, to close at Rs. 48.50, while John Keells Holdings declined Rs. 0.10, or 0.51%, to close at Rs. 19.40.

Overseas Realty was also among the leading contributors to market turnover, although its share price declined Rs. 0.60, or 1.12%, to close at Rs. 53.20.

Overall, trading activity reflected a cautious market environment, with institutional and high-net-worth investors showing interest in selected banking and corporate counters while retail participation remained concentrated in several smaller stocks.
