CSE Closes in Red as Dialog Axiata and Key Counters Weigh on Indices

COLOMBO, October 15, 2026 — The Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) ended the trading session in negative territory, with declines in Dialog Axiata, Carson Cumberbatch and Distilleries weighing on market performance, while turnover exceeded Rs. 1.9 billion.

The All Share Price Index (ASPI) closed lower, with the S&P SL20 Index recording a similar decline, reflecting broad selling pressure among selected heavyweight counters.

High-net-worth and institutional investor participation was evident in Dialog Axiata, Diesel & Motor Engineering and John Keells Holdings. Mixed investor interest was recorded in Sampath Bank, Lanka Milk Foods and Sierra Cables, while retail activity was concentrated in Browns Investments, Janashakthi Limited and LVL Energy Fund.

Foreign participation remained subdued, with overseas investors ending the session as net sellers, adding to the cautious tone in the market.

The Capital Goods sector emerged as the largest contributor to market turnover, supported by trading activity in John Keells Holdings, although the sector index declined 0.89%. John Keells Holdings shares fell Rs. 0.20, or 1.10%, to close at Rs. 17.90.

The Telecommunication Services sector ranked second in turnover contribution, driven by Dialog Axiata, as its sector index dropped 2.68%. Dialog Axiata shares declined Rs. 1.30, or 2.98%, to close at Rs. 42.30, making the counter one of the key contributors to the market’s downward movement.

Other notable turnover contributors included Diesel & Motor Engineering, Sampath Bank and Lanka IOC.

Diesel & Motor Engineering shares slipped Rs. 2.50, or 0.19%, to close at Rs. 1,298.50. Sampath Bank declined Rs. 0.50, or 0.36%, to Rs. 138.00, while Lanka IOC lost Rs. 0.50, or 0.40%, to finish at Rs. 124.00.

The session highlighted the influence of heavyweight counters on overall market performance, with losses in selected large-cap stocks outweighing investor activity across several sectors.

With foreign investors remaining net sellers and the benchmark indices closing lower, market direction will continue to depend on investor sentiment, institutional participation and price movements among leading listed companies.
