Rs. 3.09 Billion Surgical Ward Complex Planned for Tangalle Hospital

TANGALLE, October 17, 2026 — A nine-storey surgical ward complex estimated to cost Rs. 3.09 billion is planned for Tangalle Base Hospital as part of efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and improve medical services in Sri Lanka’s Hambantota District.
According to the Ministry of Health, construction is expected to commence by the end of 2026, with the project scheduled to be implemented in four phases.
The proposed development was discussed during an inspection visit to Tangalle Base Hospital by Deputy Minister of Health Hansaka Wijemuni on Wednesday, October 14.
During discussions with hospital officials, attention was also given to plans for a five-storey medical ward complex to address existing space constraints and improve patient care.
The meeting further considered the provision of a CT scanner and other modern medical equipment to strengthen the hospital’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
Tangalle Base Hospital, which has a capacity of 339 beds, is one of the key government healthcare institutions serving residents across the Hambantota District.
During the visit, the Deputy Minister also reviewed staff shortages, ambulance facilities and other essential resources needed to support the hospital’s daily operations.
Wijemuni said the proposed development projects would be implemented in coordination with the relevant Provincial Council, with financial assistance from the Central Government.
The planned infrastructure expansion is expected to support the hospital’s capacity to deliver surgical and medical services while addressing existing limitations in facilities and resources.
