Luxury World Cruise Suspended in Cambodia as Soaring Fuel Costs Strand Passengers

PHNOM PENH, October 28, 2026 — Passengers aboard the luxury residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey have been left stranded in Cambodia after its US-based operator suspended operations, citing an extraordinary increase in fuel costs.

The company said it was coordinating disembarkation plans and temporary accommodation for passengers while pursuing a 60-day restructuring and recapitalisation process. It cautioned that a successful outcome was not guaranteed.

Bloomberg, citing the operator’s founder, reported that approximately 200 passengers were aboard when they were instructed to disembark.

The suspension, announced on Tuesday, interrupted a voyage that began in Belfast in October 2024. The planned three-and-a-half-year itinerary was intended to cover nearly 150 countries.

According to the operator, monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia had climbed from approximately US$1,800 to as much as US$8,000, amid the surge in global fuel prices following the outbreak of the Iran war.

The company said it had slowed the itinerary and extended stays in port to reduce consumption. However, these measures had failed to absorb the additional expense, while passing the full increase to residents was considered impractical.

The nearly 200-metre vessel can accommodate up to 650 passengers and offers facilities including restaurants, bars, a swimming pool deck and a pickleball court.

Cabin residency prices range from US$120,000 to US$440,000, with rental options starting at approximately US$3,500 a month. The company also introduced a lifetime residency programme last year aimed at people seeking to spend their retirement at sea.

The latest disruption follows difficulties at the start of the voyage, when repairs delayed the ship’s departure from Belfast for several months and reportedly cost the operator millions of pounds.

Passengers now face uncertainty over when, or whether, the voyage will resume as the company seeks fresh capital and reorganises its operations.
