Rumesh Pathirage Strikes Asian Games Gold with 88.55m Javelin Throw

SRI LANKA, September 29, 2026 — Sri Lankan javelin star Rumesh Pathirage has secured the Asian Games gold medal with a commanding 88.55-metre throw, capping an exceptional season in which he has established himself among the world’s leading javelin throwers.

Pathirage produced his winning effort with his final throw of the competition, finishing ahead of India’s Yashvir Singh, who claimed silver with a personal best of 85.72 metres, and compatriot Rohit Yadav, who secured bronze with 84.35 metres.

Pakistan’s Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem finished fourth after recording a best throw of 80.29 metres.

The 23-year-old Sri Lankan initially struggled to find his rhythm, opening the competition with a throw of 73.53 metres. It was his only throw below 80 metres this season.

He quickly recovered, however, producing a major improvement in his second round before unleashing an 88.33-metre throw in his fourth attempt. That effort moved him ahead of the Indian challengers and put him firmly in control of the competition.

After recording a no-throw in his fifth attempt, Pathirage saved his best for last, sending the javelin 88.55 metres to secure the continental title.

Exceptional Season Continues

The Asian Games gold adds another major title to what has been an outstanding season for the Sri Lankan athlete.

Pathirage entered the competition having won almost every major event he had contested during the year, including gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, the Diamond League Final and the inaugural Ultimate Championships in Budapest.

His performances have also placed him at the top of the global javelin rankings.

In June, Pathirage produced a remarkable 92.62-metre throw at the Rome Diamond League, setting a new Sri Lankan national record and establishing the world-leading mark for the season.

He followed that performance with another huge throw of 92.07 metres to win gold at the Zurich Diamond League in August.

The performances made Pathirage only the fourth javelin thrower in history to surpass the 92-metre mark within a single season.

Eyes on 92.97m Asian Record

Despite his latest continental title, Pathirage has set his sights even higher.

The Sri Lankan star has previously spoken about his ambition to challenge the Asian record of 92.97 metres, set by Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

His latest Asian Games victory further strengthens his position among the sport’s elite and underlines Sri Lanka’s growing presence in international athletics.

Pathirage’s combination of consistency and extraordinary distances has made him one of the country’s most prominent athletes on the global stage.

With the Asian Games gold now added to his collection of major international titles, Pathirage closes another remarkable chapter in his career while keeping the 92.97-metre Asian record firmly within his sights.
