CSE Snaps Six-Session Losing Streak as Buying Interest Improves

COLOMBO, October 2, 2026 — The Colombo Stock Exchange snapped a six-session losing streak on Thursday, with both benchmark indices closing higher as buying interest improved and market breadth turned marginally positive.

The All Share Price Index (ASPI) gained 67.97 points, or 0.33%, to close at 20,880.90, while the S&P SL20 advanced around 0.14% to 5,902.46. The ASPI remained above its previous close throughout most of the session and moved beyond 20,920 intraday before late-session selling trimmed the gains.

Market turnover stood at Rs. 1.43 billion, with approximately 65.4 million shares changing hands. The Banking sector led activity with turnover of Rs. 489.34 million, followed by the Capital Goods sector with around Rs. 421.33 million.

Sampath Bank recorded the highest individual counter turnover, with substantial crossing activity contributing to the day’s market value. Crossings were also recorded in Access Engineering, Lanka IOC, Hatton National Bank, John Keells Holdings, Hayleys and Richard Pieris.

Market breadth improved modestly, with 101 stocks gaining against 94 decliners, producing an advance-decline ratio of 1.07.

However, foreign investor participation remained a key drag on sentiment. Foreign investors ended the session as net sellers, recording an outflow of around Rs. 94 million, while domestic investors accounted for the bulk of buying activity.

Dialog Axiata was among the strongest positive contributors to the ASPI, alongside Singer Sri Lanka, Carson Cumberbatch, LOLC Holdings and Commercial Bank. On the downside, LOLC Finance, Sri Lanka Telecom and People’s Leasing & Finance were among the key negative contributors.

The recovery comes after a prolonged period of weakness in the market, with the ASPI having fallen below the 21,000 level earlier in the week. Thursday’s gains therefore provide some relief, but the relatively modest turnover and continued foreign selling suggest that investor conviction has yet to fully recover.

For investors, the key question now is whether the latest rebound can develop into a sustained recovery. A further improvement in market breadth and trading activity would strengthen the signal, while continued foreign outflows could limit upward momentum.

Attention will now turn to whether the ASPI can reclaim and sustain the 20,900–21,000 range in the next few sessions, potentially providing a clearer indication of the market’s near-term direction.
