Sri Lanka Launches Islandwide Dengue Control Programme Amid Rising Risk

The Sri Lankan Government has launched a special islandwide dengue-control programme from today (September 14) to September 19, as authorities take preventive measures against a potential increase in dengue cases.

The programme is being implemented with the participation of relevant government institutions and local authorities, with the focus on identifying and eliminating mosquito-breeding sites and raising public awareness about dengue prevention. The initiative comes as authorities seek greater public cooperation to reduce the risk of transmission.

Health and local government authorities are expected to intensify inspections of residential, commercial and public areas during the programme, while communities are being encouraged to remove stagnant water and other potential breeding grounds around their properties.

The nationwide campaign highlights the importance of community participation in controlling dengue, particularly during periods when weather conditions can create favourable environments for mosquito breeding.

Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures rather than wait until dengue cases increase.
