CSE Slips Below 21,000 as Turnover Hits Year-to-Date Low

COLOMBO, September 28, 2026 — The Colombo Stock Exchange started the week under pressure, with the benchmark ASPI falling below the 21,000 level as broad-based selling and exceptionally weak investor participation pushed daily turnover to its lowest level so far this year.
The All Share Price Index (ASPI) declined 93.56 points, or 0.44%, to 20,943.79, while the S&P SL20 fell 20.01 points, or 0.34%, to 5,920.72. The ASPI remained in negative territory for most of the session and closed close to its intraday low.
The most notable feature of Monday’s session was the sharp contraction in market activity. Turnover fell to just Rs. 595.97 million, marking the lowest daily turnover recorded year-to-date, while only 32.12 million shares changed hands.
The weak liquidity points to a significant decline in investor conviction, with market participants showing limited appetite to commit fresh capital despite the recent performance of the broader market.
Diversified Financials recorded the highest sector turnover at Rs. 128.71 million, while John Keells Holdings (JKH) was the most actively traded individual counter, generating Rs. 74.69 million in turnover.
Crossings accounted for approximately 15% of total market turnover, led by JKH with Rs. 51.98 million and CDB with Rs. 39.55 million.
Market breadth also reflected the weakness in sentiment. Only 55 counters recorded gains, compared with 143 decliners, producing an advance-decline ratio of just 0.38.
Foreign investors, however, remained marginal net buyers, recording a net inflow of approximately Rs. 7.89 million, although overall foreign participation remained limited.
Carson Cumberbatch recorded the largest negative contribution to the ASPI, followed by Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank, Ceylinco Insurance and SMB Finance. Distilleries provided the strongest positive contribution during the session.
The combination of the ASPI falling below 21,000, extremely weak turnover and sharply negative market breadth points to a market lacking strong buying conviction.
For investors, the immediate focus will be whether trading activity recovers over the coming sessions. A sustained improvement in turnover alongside stronger market breadth could signal renewed participation, while continued low liquidity and weak breadth could indicate that investor caution remains firmly entrenched.
With the ASPI now below the 21,000 psychological level, the next few sessions could provide an important indication of whether the current weakness represents a temporary pause or the beginning of a broader shift in market sentiment.
