Mahaweli River Water Levels Rise as Kandy Areas Face Flood Risk

COLOMBO, September 20, 2026 — Authorities have issued a flood warning for several areas in Kandy District as water levels in the Mahaweli River continue to rise, urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety instructions.

The Irrigation Department has warned that further increases in the river’s water level could result in flooding in low-lying and vulnerable areas.

The warning particularly covers Gelioya, Gampola, Nawalapitiya and Peradeniya, where residents have been advised to stay alert to developments and be prepared to move to safer locations if required.

Divisional Secretaries and police authorities in the affected areas have been instructed to take appropriate measures to protect residents and respond promptly should the situation deteriorate.

Authorities may direct residents to designated safe centres depending on the severity and progression of the flooding situation.

The warning was issued by I.A.K. Ranaweera, Deputy Director (Disaster Management), on behalf of the Kandy District Secretary, as precautionary measures remain in place amid the rising river levels.
