Sri Lanka Plans Integrated Digital Database to Strengthen Praja Shakthi Poverty Eradication Programme

COLOMBO, October 14, 2026 — Sri Lanka is considering the development of an integrated digital database to identify rural development needs and improve the implementation of poverty alleviation initiatives under the Government’s Praja Shakthi national programme.
The proposal was discussed on October 13 at the Ministry of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, under the patronage of Minister Dr. Upali Pannila, as authorities explored ways to consolidate relevant development data on a single digital platform.
The proposed system is intended to support more targeted rural development planning by bringing relevant information together to identify community needs, establish development priorities and strengthen efforts to eradicate poverty.
Officials from the Praja Shakthi National Secretariat, the Department of Rural Development and the Rural Development Training and Research Institute, all operating under the ministry, participated in the discussions.
Digital data to guide rural development
Discussions focused on the feasibility of integrating relevant data into a centralised digital database that could provide a clearer picture of poverty-related challenges and development requirements across rural communities.
Such a system could help authorities identify priority areas, improve the planning of development interventions and coordinate programmes based on the specific needs of communities.
The discussions also examined how the proposed platform could be used in formulating rural development plans and establishing an effective mechanism for implementing the system.
Focus on implementation and coordination
The initiative reflects the importance of reliable data and coordinated planning in delivering public development programmes. An integrated database could provide government institutions with a common information platform to support decision-making and improve the alignment of development activities with local requirements.
However, the effectiveness of the proposed system would depend on the quality and accuracy of the information collected, coordination among participating institutions and the establishment of an effective implementation framework.
The discussions remain focused on assessing the feasibility and practical application of the proposed database, with no specific implementation timeline or budget announced in the information released.
The proposed digital platform forms part of the Government’s broader Praja Shakthi programme, which prioritises poverty eradication and community empowerment through more targeted rural development initiatives.
